HistoryA short history of the oil lamp. The cast, gilded foot of the same candelabras. We look for this quality of casting in an oil lamp’s foot. The Argand burner of the 1780s, with its hollow wick and glass chimney, made oil lamps far brighter than candles. Whale oil and other fuels lit homes through the first half of the nineteenth century, until petroleum was drilled in Pennsylvania in 1859 and kerosene made bright, affordable light common.Electric light began reaching homes in the 1880s. Many oil lamps were converted then and in the decades since; others survived as they were made.
Our restorationHow we convert an oil lamp.We keep the original font, collar and foot, and replace the old burner with a solid-brass electrical fitting, a new socket and new wiring. Each listing says exactly what was kept, what was replaced and whether an original burner or chimney comes with the lamp.See how a lamp comes apart →
