HistoryA short history of Murano glass.Six 1980s Venetian glasses, millefiori cane in white cased glass, in our collection now.In 1291 Venice moved its glass furnaces to Murano, and the island has been a center of glassmaking ever since. Its workshops developed techniques you can still recognize in a well-made lamp: sommerso, with layers of color cased one inside another; bullicante, a controlled pattern of bubbles; and pulegoso, glass filled with countless tiny bubbles that soften the light. In the twentieth century, Murano workshops made lamps for homes around the world. In the best of them, the glass body is the design, and the light simply shows it off.

Our restorationHow we restore a Murano lamp.We don’t alter the glass, including its bubbles and color variations. We take out the old wiring and fittings and rebuild the lamp with solid-brass hardware, new sockets and new wiring. Each listing says which parts are original and which are new.See how a lamp comes apart →
