AboutHow we choose and restore our lamps. We buy well-made antique and vintage lamps, replace their wiring and fittings, and tell you exactly what’s original and what’s new. We handle lamps from any period.Shop lighting ↗How we work ↓William Manker studio pottery lamp, late 1940s–1950s · From the archive.
How we chooseWe start with how it was made.An old shade or a worn cord can hide a very good lamp. We judge a lamp by its body instead: the quality of the glass, glaze or metalwork, and its proportions. If the body is good, we buy the lamp, whatever its age. That’s why our archive runs from 1830s French gilt brass to 1980s Swedish stoneware.Whether you’re looking for Murano glass, studio pottery or an oil lamp made before the 1890s and converted to electric, we look for the same thing: a body made with real skill.Tell us what you’re looking for →
The Marbro jar lamp’s original ceramic body. How we restoreThe body stays. The workings are new.The body is the part someone made by hand. A glassblower gathered molten glass on a pipe and shaped it while it was still hot, with only minutes to get the form right. A potter threw or cast the shape, then built up the glaze coat by coat through more than one firing. A metalworker cast the brass, then chased and finished every detail with hand tools. Each of those skills took years to learn, and few lamps are made that way today. So we leave the body alone. We don’t refinish it, repaint it or polish away its patina. Its color, the small irregularities left by the maker’s hand and the wear of decades of use are part of what you’re buying, and once they’re removed they can’t be put back. Then we do whatever the lamp needs to work properly, usually taking out the old wiring and fittings and rebuilding it with solid-brass hardware, new sockets and new wiring.Every lamp we sell is in working order and ready to use, and its listing says exactly what we replaced and what’s original.Read the preservation note →We only restore the lamps we sell. We don’t repair customers’ lamps.
How we researchEvery lamp comes with what we know. Before we list a lamp, we look for anything that shows who made it and when: labels, stamps, marks and the way it was built. The Marbro lamp’s maker was named on a paper label between its sockets. The Manker lamp’s studio mark was hidden under the pottery, and we only found it when we took the lamp apart to clean it.If we can confirm the maker, we name them. If a lamp only looks like a maker’s work, we say “in the style of” and claim nothing more. Every listing also gives measurements, condition and the work we’ve done. After a lamp sells, its photos and research stay in our archive, so you can still point us to it when you want something similar.Explore the Archive →Read the Journal →The original Marbro company label, between the two sockets. The Manker lamp’s original fittings and turned wood cap.
Packing and deliveryHow your lamp is packed and sent.We pack every lamp by hand. Each piece is wrapped in bubble wrap and secured in its box so it can’t shift on the way, which keeps the chance of damage in transit as low as we can make it. We upcycle clean, sturdy boxes and packing materials when they’re in good condition, and every lamp ships with its own card and tag.Orders ship from Southern California within 1–2 business days, insured for the full value of the piece. How long delivery takes depends on where it’s going and the time of year; the carrier’s tracking shows the expected date.If shipping costs more than you expectedLarge, heavy and delicate pieces can be expensive to ship at standard rates. If the shipping shown at checkout is more than you’d like to pay, email us before you buy. We can sometimes find a different carrier, a slower service or a more flexible timeline that brings the cost down, and local pickup in Southern California is also possible.Ask about shipping ↗Shipping and returns →
